In an aging society with declining birthrates

One of the biggest challenges facing the Japanese church and Japanese society is the declining birthrate and aging population. The number of retirees is increasing and the number of workers is decreasing. The question is, how can we turn this Crisis into a Chance? This declining birthrate and aging population is a challenge that many countries, including China, will face, and I am sure that our experience will be utilized in other countries as well.

One of the things the church needs to do in this age of declining birthrates is to reduce the burden on the working generation. As the number of workers decreases, the workload of each servant will increase. Pastors have to be involved in many churches, seminary teachers have to be in charge of many classes, and so on. However, as the number of young people decreases, it will become more and more difficult to recruit them. To break the negative cycle, the publication of good books is somewhat helpful. If our congregations could develop biblical and theological values through reading, the burden on our pastors would be reduced. Also, if we had more useful books that can be read in our native language, it would take less time to prepare for seminary classes. It would also enhance the “self-training” of seminary students. Of course, we will always have to fight the danger of overemphasis on knowledge...

Another thing that is necessary in an aging society is to create ministries for the retired generation. Workers who are gradually retiring from the front lines should be able to use the skills and experience they have accumulated for the benefit of the church. One such area would be writing and translation services. The time and effort they put into preparing the sermons each week could be gradually allocated to nurture the next generation. In this way, we could gradually form a fellowship of mutual giving.

The ideas I have just mentioned can only solve a few of the problems, but I sincerely hope that the ministry of TREE will be used in these areas. We are still in the early stages of building a network, but please pray that this ministry can serve as a hub.

日本の教会と日本の社会が、直面している最大の課題の一つは、少子高齢化です。退職者が増え、働き手が減っていく。この一つの危機を、どのようにチャンスに変えられるかが、問われています。この少子高齢化は、中国を初め多くの国が直面していく課題ですので、私たちの経験が他の国でもきっと生かされていくことでしょう。

この少子化時代の教会において、必要なことの一つは、現役世代の負担を減らすことです。働き手が減りますと、一人一人の奉仕者が担う働きが増えていきます。牧師はたくさんの教会に関わらなくてはいけませんし、神学校の教師は多くのクラスを担当しなくてはいけません。けれども、若者が減っていきますと、その人材を確保することがますます難しくなっていきます。その負の連鎖を断ち切るために、良い本の出版はいくらか役に立ちます。読書を通して、信徒が聖書的、神学的価値観を育んでいけるなら、牧師の負担は減ります。また、母国語で読める有益な書物が増えるなら、神学校の授業準備にかかる時間は、ずいぶん抑えられます。また、神学生の自己訓練も充実していくでしょう。もちろん、常に知識偏重の危険と戦う必要がありますが…

高齢化時代に必要なもう一つのことは、退職世代の担う働きを生み出していくことです。徐々に一線から退いていく働き手が、これまで培ってきたスキルや経験値を教会のために生かしていく。そのような分野の一つとして、執筆や翻訳の奉仕をあげることができるのではないでしょうか。毎週の説教の準備に費やしてきた時間と労力を、少しずつ次の世代の育成のために振り分けていく。そうすれば、与え合う交わりが、少しずつ形成されていくのではないでしょうか。

今あげたようなアイデアは、一部の課題しか解決することができませんが、TREEのミニストリーがこれらの領域において用いられていくことを心から願っています。まだまだネットワークさえ築けていない段階ですが、このミニストリーがハブの役割を果たせるよう是非ともお祈りください。
